We publish English-language textbooks and other educational materials in print and online in the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia for undergraduate and graduate students and lifelong learners. Our programs are targeted to the sciences, engineering, mathematics, and accounting, with growing positions in business, education, and modern languages. In Australia, we are a leading secondary school publisher.
Since the early 1990s, we have consistently gained market share and improved the profitability of our educational publishing business through our strategic focus and a collaborative process that brings together our editorial, production, marketing, and sales forces with authors, faculty, and students. In November 2001, we acquired 47 outstanding titles from Thomson Learning in the areas of biology, chemistry, and geology, mathematics, business and finance, modern languages, and psychology. The acquisition in May 1999 of college textbooks and instructional packages from Pearson Education in biology/anatomy and physiology, engineering, computer science, mathematics, economics, finance, and teacher education has also helped to fuel robust growth.
We target our deep content in core disciplines to an expanding global market of professors, students, professionals, and lifelong learners. Wiley has an active program of publishing first and revised editions, with a number of market-leading franchises and key author teams.
Our mission is to help teachers teach and students learn. We maximize the value of our content by publishing it in different formats and/or different media. Wiley is working with courseware providers such as WebCT and Blackboard to offer interactive learning tools. Another example is the Interactions CD series, based on our market-leading anatomy and physiology textbooks by Tortora and Grabowski, which provide dynamic illustrations, animations, and exercises, and direct linkage to course Websites. We also have a relationship with XanEdu, a division of ProQuest, to build Wiley Select, an online custom courseware program in business, education, psychology, and other disciplines. This program enables users to create customized course materials by combining Wiley’s textbook content with premier content from such sources as The Wall Street Journal, Harvard Business School, Annual Review of Psychology, Teacher Education Quarterly, and many others.
Wiley’s WileyPLUS (formerly known as eGrade Plus) is a powerful online tool that provides instructors with an integrated suite of teaching and learning resources in one easy-to-use Website. WileyPLUS effectively integrates print, online, CD-ROM, and classroom resources for any course or subject area using an activity-based interface that is designed and organized according to what instructors and students need to do, providing a single source for course planning, presentations, study, homework, and testing.
Instructors can easily adapt, customize, and add to Wiley content through course and Website administration tools included in the WileyPLUS browser format. Homework can be assigned and automatically graded by Wiley’s mathematically “smart” WileyPLUS testing engine, bringing students immediate feedback as well as access to a variety of context-sensitive support resources that build confidence and understanding--hints and explanations, direct links to text content, interactive problem-solving, and practice quizzes. The flexibility of WileyPLUS enhances the instructor’s ability both to motivate students and to shape their learning experience.
To support educators in their integration of technology into their curricula, Wiley has created the Faculty Resource Network (FRN), a team of leading academics retained by us to provide one-on-one and “virtual seminar” peer training. Officially launched in January 2002, the FRN has actually been active since June 2001 and already serves faculty at over 3,000 institutions.
The outlook for our educational business is very positive, reflecting favorable demographics (increasing number of 18- to 22-year-olds, lifelong learners, and students taking online courses), as well as our focused strategy that capitalizes on these trends through new products, investments in technology, acquisitions, and partnerships. |
