SOUTH WINDSOR, Conn., May 29, 2008 – United Space Alliance (USA), NASA’s prime Space Shuttle contractor, has selected UTC Power as its 2007 Supplier of the Year in the Large Business category. UTC Power is a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE:UTX) company.
UTC Power produces and maintains the Space Shuttle fuel cells under contract to USA. Three 12kW UTC Power fuel cells aboard each Space Shuttle Orbiter generate all of the spacecraft’s electrical power and provide drinking water for the astronaut crew.
Every U.S. manned space mission during the past four decades has used fuel cell powerplants built by UTC Power. A fuel cell is a highly efficient power generating system that produces electricity through an electrochemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen. Water is also produced as a byproduct.
“United Space Alliance’s procurement and technical teams recognize UTC Power’s contributions and realize how fortunate we are to have the company as part of our team,” said Michael Jones, USA vice president, Logistics and Material.
“UTC Power is very proud of its 42-year involvement with the U.S. space program, and of our relationship with United Space Alliance,” said Jan van Dokkum, UTC Power president. “We are pleased to be recognized for our contributions.”
The company will be officially recognized at an awards ceremony in September in Huntsville, Alabama.
UTC Power is a full-service provider of environmentally responsible power solutions. With 50 years of experience, UTC Power is the world leader in developing and producing fuel cells for on-site power, transportation, space and defense applications, as well as a leader in innovative, renewable energy solutions and combined cooling, heating and power solutions for the distributed energy market.
