SHFCA Activities Update

Fuel Cell Seminar
Date: 15th -19th October 2007
Location: San Antonio, Texas

This autumn SHFCA will be taking part in the joint UK Trade & Investment (UKTI), Scottish Development International (SDI) and South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) mission to the Fuel Cell Seminar which takes place in San Antonio (Texas) from 15th to 19th October 2007. SHFCA and Fuel Cell Markets have been assisting with the organisation of the exhibitors for the 1000 sq ft pavilion. SHFCA members who are taking part include: the Pure Energy Centre, St Andrews Fuel Cells Ltd., University of St Andrews, the Western Isles Council and the Hydrogen Office.

Hydrogen & Fuel Cells in the Built Environment; Applications & Standards
Date: 4th October 2007
Location: Glasgow

Local authorities are major purchasers of supplies and equipment, including heating and electrical systems (CHP) for both new-build and refurbishments, whether in-house or through Housing Associations. The largest home market for stationary HFC applications is in public sector buildings, such as local and central government buildings, and other public sector bodies.

Forward commitments by public sector procurers offers a powerful mechanism for the market to deliver innovative solutions to meet policy needs. Such commitments also provide supplier companies and their investors with long-term confidence against which to commit resources for manufacturing scale-up.

SHFCA is committed to working with local authorities and the construction industry to identify short and longer term real-world applications for hydrogen and fuel cells in the built environment. Hydrogen and fuel cells offer many benefits not met by other conventional systems, whether in single building micro-CHP applications or larger-scale local grids and district heating schemes. Whether we look at one house or 1000, demonstration projects and solutions are already underway in Scotland.

With Scotland’s housing needs running at around 20,000 a year for the next decade, this provides a huge incentive for the HFC industry in Scotland to engage with local authorities and the construction industry. The seminar on 4 October puts down an important marker in that process and we look forward to a frank and open dialogue.

Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Offshore Sector
Date: 3 December 2007
Location: Aberdeen

There is a significant skills base in the offshore industry in Scotland which also has the advantage of being highly mobile and internationalised. It is not yet known to what extent these skills could be transferred over to the HFC industry. However, their incorporation into the HFC industry would immediately provide a high quality skills base, and as the offshore industry gradually winds down, it will be essential to retain those skills in Scotland.

The offshore industry majors have an invaluable future role in development and delivery of hydrogen systems.

This full-day meeting will explore the potential integration of the offshore sector with the HFC industry in Scotland.

H208 - 'Hydrogen & Fuel Cells in the Real World - Applications in Transportation & Power' Date: 21st – 22nd May 2008
Location: Aberdeen

Come May next year we are going to blow the socks off the Fuel Cell Industry!

And finally, SHFCA is working towards moving it’s offices to the Hydrogen Office in April of next year.
