The HEP® is a patented, cost-effective, foil-based heat exchanger and catalytic reactor made of high temperature materials throughout. Various foil inserts adapt the HEP® to your system requirements without reformatting the basic platform. Two sets of inserts are required for optimal performance. The HEP® can transfer up to 2.5 kW of heat with relatively low pressure drops.
Multiple HEP® devices can be bundled in parallel to incrementally increase capacity and allow system scale-up without significant redesign.
By using catalyst coated inserts the HEP® can be used for combined heat transfer/catalysis applications such as pre-reforming for solid oxide fuel cell anode gas.
Specs:
5 formats are available with the following foil inserts pre-installed: triangular, ruffled, plain flat crest (pfc), plain round crest (prc) or no inserts. The last option is available for experimentation with multiple insert types. THE HEP® MUST BE RUN WITH FOILS INSERTED. Consult datasheet for heat-flow and pressure drop characteristics
Upper use temperature: 900°C Approximate dimensions: 300 mm long by 42 mm square, not including gas connectors Adapters for different tubing sizes can be attached to the HEP® (option)
Catacel Heat Exchanger Platform
Catacel's Heat Exchanger Platform, HEP™, is a patented (U.S. Pat. No. D560,276), cost-effective, foil-based module made of high-temperature materials throughout.
Key Benefits of the HEP are:
- Heat transfer up to 2.5 kW per module
- Easily bundled for greater heat exchange
- Readily customized through foil inserts
- Becomes a reactor by depositing catalysts
A variety of corrugation geometries can be inserted into the HEP modules to tailor the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics to your specific needs without resorting to significant and costly custom engineering.
Catalytic coatings can be applied to the inserts to enable the HEP to work as a reactor as well as a heat exchanger.
HEP module specs:
Heat transfer reference point: ~2.5 kW with 280 slpm air, counterflow, air-in at 900°C Max temperature: 900 °C Pressure tested: 35 kPa Weight: ~340 g, depending on insert Foils must be inserted during operation
The HEP module has been characterized on Catacel's evaluation test bench. Shown here are pressure drop & heat transfer for the four insert geometries with air-to-air heat transfer. Hot side air is at 700°C and cold side at 20°C with flow rates ranging from 70 to 285 SLPM as indicated. Such information enables performance modeling for a wide variety of applications.

Various gas connections can be attached to the HEP as an option. Stock fittings include sanitary flanges and Swagelok™ tubes. |

By bundling several mass-produced HEP modules in parallel or series a wide range of heat exchange/reaction designs can be met. |
