PowerCell has developed fuel cell technology for more than a decade, and has a unique design that enables the production of a lightweight and reliable power source for automotive applications.
The fuel cell from PowerCell is a PEM fuel cell (Polymer Electrolyte Membrane) which today is the most common technology used in automotive applications. The PEM system was selected due to its reliable and dynamic characteristics which allows for quick startup and shutdown.
The main competing technology for automotive fuel cell applications, the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC), was abandoned due to the long start-up times, problems with thermal cycling and low power cycling abilities.
The commercial available fuel cell platform covers 1 to 7 kW development and testing of the next generation has been started.
