P21 Successfully Completes Fuel Cell Test in Kuwait

Fuel cell Manufacturer from Brunnthal Equips Mobile Base Station with Backup Power / Successful Test Results Lead to Follow-up Negotiations Brunnthal-Munich, June 2008. At the end of March 2008, P21 GmbH, one of the world’s leading manufacturer of fuel cell backup power systems to supply emergency electrical power to the telecommunications industry, successfully completed a six-month test with one of the leading providers of mobile telephony in Kuwait.

In collaboration with a local partner, a 6-kilowatt Premion T fuel cell system was in-stalled in October 2007. The existing 3G base station is located near Fnaitees in Ku-wait City. During the test phase, the fuel cell system took over the task of supplying emergency electrical power. Furthermore, the regular power supply was deliberately switched off several times. Premion T was thus tested under actual conditions, includ-ing outdoor temperatures up to 55° Celsius, relative humidity greater than ten percent, and enormous dust clouds. The result: Premion T ably proved its reliability.

“We’re very satisfied with the successful progress of the field test,” says Manfred Ostermaier, member of the board of directors of P21. “Under these extreme climatic conditions, our system once again proved its robustness and technological maturity. Now we’re in the midst of follow-up negotiations about possible orders of additional systems.”

The Near and Middle East rank among the regions of the world with the highest growth rates in the sales of mobile telephones. To a progressively greater extent, cellphones are replacing dilapidated and/or inadequate landlines. No end to the mobile-telephony boom is in sight, nor is any to be expected. The demands placed on reliable network operation are increasingly accordingly, especially where mobile telephones are the primary mode of communication. Battery systems to supply emergency electrical power are not suitable for use under difficult climatic conditions, so mobile network providers are gradually retrofitting to fuel cell systems.

Manfred Ostermaier sees in this development an increasingly strong awareness about the use of environmentally acceptable sources of energy: “Not only in the field of backup power supply, but also in energy generation per se, the fuel cell technology will become an indispensable component of electrical supply concepts which are con-ceived on the basis of regenerative energy carriers such as wind or solar. These are not merely dreams of the future: P21 is already hard at work today creating tangible and complete solutions that satisfy all relevant criteria for sustainable and economical power generation.”
