P21 supplies another three fuel cell systems
-
Great momentum for high-tech from Germany
Brunnthal, May 17, 2006 - P21 GmbH of Brunnthal near Munich will be supplying three fuel cell systems by the end of Q2 2006 to PASM, Power and Air Condition Solution Management GmbH & Co. KG, a subsidiary of Deutsche Telekom. P21 has thus managed to win over several customers worldwide for its products since its market entry.
The fuel cell systems that P21 makes will be used to provide power to mobile communications base stations, even during outages. Recent natural disasters have shown how important a functioning mobile communications network is, especially during emergencies when the grid fails. Conventional systems work with batteries, which are not very environmentally friendly.
"Deutsche Telekom expressly encourages companies like P21 in their efforts to make fuel cell technology ready for the market," explained Peter Fleischmann, Director of Portfolio Management at Power & Air Solutions. "We see enormous potential in this technology and are therefore taking this first opportunity to use it. The systems will be used at several locations in North Rhine / Westphalia."
"The decision that Power & Air Solutions reached to use fuel cells provides a lot of momentum for this future technology," explained Dieter Brächtken, Executive Director at P21 GmbH. "It is the right signal to support this fledgling technology in Germany on the path towards product release. The US and Japan, in particular, are working hard to develop this technology."
"Emergency power supply systems for mobile communications base stations will be the first major application for fuel cells that run on pure hydrogen," Brächtken stated. This year alone, some 350,000 such stations will be added to networks worldwide. While batterysupported systems are still less expensive up front, fuel cell systems are already competitive over the lifecycle of the system. And mass production will only make fuel cell systems even more competitive.
