A secure and safe power supply.

Hydrogen has been handled safely for some time in industrial applications.

Hydrogen production

60% of hydrogen is produced from the steam reformation of natural gas. This process will remain the most important method of hydrogen production in the near future.

How is hydrogen stored?

Hydrogen is generally stored in pressurized cylinders, as a fluid, or in what are called hydride tanks.

  • Pressurised cylinders
The most common type of long-term hydrogen storage, in which hydrogen is compressed. The cylinders come in various sizes, but generally have a volume around 50 L.
In the automotive industry, pressurized gas cylinders are made of carbon fibres to reduce their weight at a given capacity.
  • Liquid hydrogen
Hydrogn liquifies at -252°C. The automotive industry is looking into this option as a potential solution for hydrogen storage. The drawback is that hydrogen has to be cooled and stored in highly insulated tanks. This solution is therefore not suited for the long-term storage of hydrogen.
  • Metal hydride tanks
Hydrogen is basically electrically neutral and can therefore be stored in the empty spaces of a metal grid or in a grid-shaped alloy, which therefore provides another option for hydrogen storage. However, we are just beginning to develop a solution that would allow us to store large amounts of hydrogen.

Hydrogen is safe.

Hydrogen is not more dangerous than gasoline, natural gas, or propane; in fact, it is safer. In practice, the former are much more likely to create an explosive gas than volatile hydrogen. Furthermore, hydrogen does not produce any toxic emissions when burned.
