First Dutch mobile power generator based on fuel cells

With the demonstration of the “Purity”, firstly at the ‘Energy 2008’, from 7 up till 9th October, in ‘s- Hertogenbosch, and secondly at the planned 6th National Hydrogen Conference in Arnhem, the introduction of the first Dutch mobile power generator based on fuel cells has become reality.

Break-through

In close cooperation between Bredenoord and NedStack the prototype has been built. With the launch of the Purity the increasing call for generators free from polluting emissions, such as CO, CO2, NOx, fine dust, SOx has been answered to. The Purity lives up to nowadays customer’s demands.

The Purity can be put into operation everywhere AC power is needed. The PEM fuel cell stack sees to the conversion of hydrogen into electricity, water and heat. With a standard bundle of hydrogen cylinders the system can easily produce 4 kW power for the period of approx. 40 hours. Replacing the cylinders is a simple and easy procedure.

Hydrogen is an energy carrier that can be produced in many ways and is not dependable of fossil wells. By the use of the fuel cell technology of NedStack the Purity is innovative and is in the lead of the generator market.

Advantages of the technology

NedStack delivered the fuel cell stack and technology in order to enable Bredenoord the production of the Purity. Special feature of this power generator is that it is mobile and operates off-grid. Starting and shutting off the system becomes effective with just one push on the button. The power supply with this technology comes with a high efficiency of 40 to 60 %, zero hazardous emission, nihilistic vibration or sound.

The base of the Purity is the fuel cell system technology developed and engineered by NedStack. In general all systems of NedStack come with a very short ramp up and ramp down cycle, are above all operated at atmospheric condition and integrated NedStack fuel cell stacks will be recycled after end of life.

Margien Storm van Leeuwen, Sales and Marketing Manager for large stationary applications: “The purity shows that our system technology and fuel cells are easily operated on every location where power is required. Clean and silent power generating in vulnerable environments is not a dream anymore, it is for rent today.”

Quality and innovation

Quality is key to Bredenoord. Innovation safeguards the quality standards of Bredenoord now and in future. Next to the recent innovations, such as generators with fine dust filter units and biogas installations, Bredenoord has obtained in close cooperation with NedStack the implementation of fuel cell technology into their product development.

Paul Schurink, Manager Rental of Bredenoord says: “Bredenoord is eager to innovate and to keep up with technological developments in the area of energy supply. As a leading supplier of generators we do not only have a vision on alternative energy carriers, we do actually explore and if interesting we do implement them.

Future

For the innovators NedStack and Bredenoord it does not end at the development and introduction of the Purity; in the meantime these companies started - within a larger consortium - with the production of a second and even larger prototype power generator, called the UniFlex. This also mobile fuel cell based generator is able to run on both hydrogen and bio-ethanol. With the higher energy density of bio-ethanol, considering the limited storage capacity of fuel, the UniFlex will have a much longer autonomy at higher power than the Purity. The bio-ethanol will be converted, by use of a reformer, to a rich hydrogen containing gas to be fed to the fuel cell for the actual power generating.

The UniFlex is to be developed and constructed by order of the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management, with extra support from the SBIR (Small Business Innovation Research) subsidy arrangement issued by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. For the realization of the UniFlex the companies and/or institute NedStack, Bredenoord, Hygear, Air Poducts, Energy Research Centre Netherlands and EXENDIS joint forces. The UniFlex will be delivered to the Dutch Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management end 2009.
