Membrane

The membrane is the heart of fuel cell and electrolyser stacks. ITM has developed and patented an entirely new range of ion exchange membrane materials which:

  • are a fraction of the cost of conventional fluorinated polymers
  • lend themselves to mass production techniques
  • enable the catalysts to be more easily recycled

The majority of conventional membrane materials are fluorocarbons which are expensive and require significant chemical plant to fabricate. ITM's materials are low cost hydrocarbons made by mixing together liquid chemicals to a particular recipe.

This process enables the functional properties of the material to be varied over a wide range by modifying the ratio of its constituent components. Importantly, ITM's materials contain separate hydrophilic groups which hold water within the structure, helping to regulate hydration.
