Feature Article: Backup Power for TETRA Networks
Secure communications networks like TETRA require dependable backup power solutions which can operate for several hours or several days in an emergency when the electrical grid is no longer available. The most compelling reason to use fuel cell technology for TETRA network applications is improved reliability and security. When blackouts, earthquakes, storms and hurricanes occur, it is imperative that systems are operable and power will be delivered reliably for a long period of time regardless of the temperature or age of the backup power system. IdaTech’s fuel cell products are ideal for supporting secure communications networks, providing clean, reliable, extended run backup power (up to multiple days) for applications ranging from 250 W to 15 kW. To learn more about how the IdaTech system operates to provide power to a TETRA network, here is a short video, with commentary from Motorola!

Featured Installation:
SFR (Vodafone Group) was evaluating options to supply power to a mobile telecommunication network site known for frequent grid failures. Due to UNESCO-protected classification and significantly limited space, the site was not appropriate for installation of a diesel generator. Due to the remote location, hydrogen siting was not an option, and ultimately, SFR was searching for an environmentally friendly solution. In collaboration with Chloride, IdaTech’s international distributor partner, SFR selected the ElectraGen™5 XTR system to provide up to 5 kilowatts of –48 VDC power for long autonomy. Installed in a telecommunications shelter, the IdaTech system provided a compact, reliable, “green” solution with low maintenance and remote monitoring capabilities via GSM connection. The modularity of the ElectraGen™ XTR system allowed the transport to and installation on this difficult to access site. Incorporating both the fuel cell system and the IdaTech reformer allows a smaller footprint with increased run times for days of backup power. With an integrated tank capable of holding 220 liters of HydroPlus fuel, the ElectraGen™ XTR system provides several days of autonomy to this critical site. Update: Integration Kit for iGen™ System
Following the launch of the iGen™ system at the end of 2007, IdaTech began designing an integration kit to fulfill potential field installation challenges. IdaTech has developed an integration kit to meet the requirements of many customer applications. The iGen™ system will be paired with a fuel tank and batteries with the capacity of these dependent on the desired autonomy and other factors such as duration and frequency of the primary power outage and cycle charging characteristics. The integrated fuel tank will store enough fuel to support more than 90 hours of iGen™ system operation at full power. Additional elements such as mounting brackets, a remote user interface, logic and controls to utilize the iGen™ system dry contacts, relays, or an enclosure to house the fuel tank may be desired. The need for these and possibly other elements is dependent on the application and customer. To learn more, please contact your local IdaTech representative, or send an email to info@idatech.com.
