Fuel Cell Updates for-Apr 21 to May 04, 2008

Welcome to FuelCellWorks Inside the Industry Newsletters, the most up to date newsletters in the Fuel Cell Industry.

May 04, 2008

These newsletters were created to allow those interested in the Fuel Cell Industry and with busy schedules to keep up on a weekly basis.

The following news items made headlines this week.

In Loughbourough, near Birmingham, UK, PSA Peugeot Citroλn and Intelligent Energy presented the results of their joint H2Origin research project, aimed at fitting an advanced technology fuel cell stack into a zero-emissions urban delivery van to power its electric drivetrain. The three-year partnership has culminated in the development of the Peugeot Partner H2Origin technology demonstrator, whose electric drivetrain is powered by the latest generation Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cells.

Sony Corporation prototyped a fuel-cell system small enough to fit in one hand. The size of the system is about 50 Χ 30mm, which was realized by combining a fuel cell, Li-polymer secondary battery, control circuit and so forth. This is the first time that Sony revealed the prototype of a practical fuel-cell system including, for example, a secondary battery and control circuit. The company exhibited the evaluation results of the system at Small Fuel Cells 2008

MTI MicroFuel Cells Inc. ("MTI Micro"), the developer of Mobion(R) off-the-grid portable power solutions and a subsidiary of Mechanical Technology Incorporated ("MTI") (NASDAQ: MKTY), unveiled a new embedded micro fuel cell prototype design for handheld global positioning system ("GPS") devices at the 10th Annual International Small Fuel Cells Conference in Atlanta. MTI Micro will exhibit a micro fuel cell powered GPS prototype at booth number 101, alongside its full range of functional prototypes for use in handheld electronic devices.MTI Micro's new Mobion(R) powered GPS prototype provides three times as much energy as GPS devices powered by four disposable AA batteries. On a model with a large, full-color screen, this fuel cell design generates up to 60 hours of continuous power and provides weeks instead of days of typical usage.

Daimler announced that it's fuel cell bus fleet has broken a new record: the 36 buses together have clocked more than two million kilometers transporting around seven million passengers. Once again this zero-emission drive system has proved its high reliability and suitability for everyday use. Every kilometer clocked up also increases the extensive data, which is important for the further development of zero-emission drive systems providing valuable information for the next hybrid-based generation of fuel cell buses.30 buses from the fuel cell fleet were involved in public short-distance traffic in large European cities, a further 3 were in Perth and Beijing respectively. The fleet has clocked up round about 135,000 operating hours to date with the vehicles proving their worth in the cold wintery northern conditions of Stockholm and Reykjavik, in the summer heat of Spain and in mountainous and flat conditions.
