The following news items made headlines this week.
Akzo Nobel announced that the pilot with hydrogen fuel cells at the chlor-alkali plant of Akzo Nobel in Delfzijl reached the milestone of four thousand running hours. At this location a semi industrial pilot is running with an innovative power plant. With the reached number of operating hours the plant delivered over 200.000 kWh to the grid. An initiative by Akzo Nobel and NedStack, supported by SenterNovem.
London's Transport Authority announced that Air Products & Chemicals (NYSE:APD) Inc has won a 3.4 mln stg contract to provide hydrogen fuel for London's planned fleet of hydrogen buses.
ACAL Energy Ltd. announced the successful operation of a completely new type of fuel cell system based on its proprietary recirculating liquid cathode technology, known as FlowCath®. A 50W fully integrated multi-cell system incorporating the Flowcath technology was operated for the first time last week and produced even higher power levels than expected.
Whole Foods and UTC announced that the new Whole Foods Market in Glastonbury, Conn., will be the first supermarket to generate most of its power on-site with an ultra- clean fuel cell from UTC Power.
Protonex Technology Corporation (LSE: AIM: PTX and PTXU), a leading provider of advanced fuel cell power systems for portable, remote and mobile applications, announced that the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and development partner AeroVironment, Inc. (NASDAQ: AVAV) have documented yet another successful, record flight on a small, unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) utilizing a highly advanced fuel cell system from Protonex. AeroVironment's "Puma" UAV system broke its previous flight record of over seven hours and flew continuously for over nine hours, powered by the latest generation of Protonex' Pulse UAV power system.
Scottish and Southern Energy plc ("SSE") and Intelligent Energy have today announced the formation of a joint venture company which will develop clean and reliable, fuel cell based, combined heat and power systems ("CHP") for the light industrial, commercial and residential markets in the United Kingdom and Ireland. SSE will initially invest £1 million for a 50 per cent share in the new company, which will be called IE CHP (UK & Eire) Ltd. Intelligent Energy and SSE will make phased investments to the business as it reaches a series of mutually agreed milestones.The joint venture will combine Intelligent Energy's leading fuel cell and hydrogen generation technologies with SSE's customer base and service operations, and confirms SSE's commitment to enhancing its portfolio of clean energy alternatives.
The zero emissions Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell made a fitting Vancouver debut last week at Globe 2008's Auto Future Tech Summit. GMs Canadian engineering centre is currently building these Equinox fuel cells as part of the world's largest fuel cell vehicle fleet. Also featured at the summit was "The Hydrogen Bus", a new triple hybrid vehicle developed at Glamorgan University in Wales,
ITM Power plc (AIM: ITM) announced that on 29 February 2008 the Company signed a contract with Bi-Fuels Limited to test and jointly assess hydrogen/ diesel bi-fuel technology. The contract is the first step in establishing further test data on this technology, as ITM continues to explore the impact of hydrogen injection into diesel fuelling systems. Under the terms of the contract, Bi-Fuels is committed to develop and test technologies for Hydrogen:Diesel co-combustion in common-rail engines for ITM which are applicable to ITM's proprietary materials and processes. The Bi-Fuels contract effectively replaces the MOU with ABRO, which has expired without testing taking place.
