The following news items made headlines this week.
Virgin Atlantic, one of the world's leading long-haul airlines, and General Motors, the world's largest automaker, announced that the airline will offer passengers a zero-emissions Chevrolet Equinox Hydrogen Fuel Cell car as part of its Upper Class limo service. Initially passengers in Los Angeles will take part in the trial which will not only enable them to experience the next generation of cars but also reduce their carbon footprint. The hydrogen fuel cell limo service is expected to be extended to New York City later this year.
UTC Power, a United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX ) company, announced that its PureCell® Model 200 stationary fuel cell system at St. Agnes Hospital in Bocholt, Germany, has attained a major milestone: 10 million kilowatt-hours of generated power and more than 52,000 operating hours with its original fuel cell stack. The stack is the heart of any fuel cell power unit and key to its durability. St. Agnes Hospital, with close to 500 beds, has been an early adopter of new, environmentally responsible energy solutions. It installed the fuel cell in 2000 to meet increased demand for on-site power due to new medical equipment. The fuel cell provides the hospital with baseload electric power, heating in winter and air conditioning in summer as well as domestic hot water. The availability of the fuel cell has been as high as 97 percent in most years.
AeroVironment (AV) (NASDAQ:AVAV), a leader in unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and efficient electric energy systems, announced that it has flown its Puma small unmanned aircraft for over nine hours, powered by an onboard fuel cell battery hybrid energy storage system. This broke the previous announced Puma flight record of over seven hours. A two-camera payload system provided a live, streaming video feed from the Puma, the largest of AV's portfolio of small unmanned aircraft systems that also includes Raven and Wasp. The nine-hour flight duration more than triples the duration of Puma's standard battery-only operation.
Neah Power Systems, Inc., (OTCBB: NPWS), a leading developer of fuel cells for military application and portable electronic devices, announced that it has transitioned to the larger (43x43mm) electrodes, from its previously used 30x30mm electrodes. These larger electrodes will better utilize the 6” and 8” Silicon wafers used to produce the electrodes. These developments were funded in large part through Neah Power’s Department of Defense contract administered by the Office of Naval Research.
Acta SpA ("Acta"), the AIM-listed catalyst developer, announced that it has entered into a Joint Collaboration Agreement (the "Agreement") with CMR Fuel Cells plc ("CMR") to accelerate the launch of Acta's fuel cell catalysts in portable electronics applications.
Fuel cell developer Acumentrics Corporation announced that it has received the American Society for Competitiveness (ASC) Philip Crosby Medallion for Global Competitiveness in recognition of the company’s exceptional technological performance.
From the Geneva Motor Show and Pininfarina came news of the unveiling of its innovative concept car, the Sintesi, featuring Nuvera's Quadrivium(TM) drive. The Sintesi is powered by Nuvera's Quadrivium drive, which incorporates world-leading hydrogen generation technology with state-of-the-art fuel cells in four distributed wheel power modules. This diversion from traditional drive trains gave Pininfarina the freedom to design the car with the passenger in mind rather than the engine, resulting in a highly stylized car of the future.
Finally, Green high-tech venture Violet(TM) Fuel Cell Sticks(TM) announced it has achieved an extremely high, 15KW/Liter cell density with their Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) Stick(TM). Previous commercial fuel cells, including both SOFCs and PEMs, have struggled to meet a target of 2KW/Liter; and previous advanced concepts have struggled to achieve 4KW/Liter. The Violet(TM) Stick(TM) has overcome the most significant hurdles facing fuel cells, and it resolves the technical limitations of existing technologies, such as sealing, cracking and manifolding problems, and poor volumetric density.
