Our energy future - creating a low carbon economy |
The UK Government has recently released a white paper defining its long-term vision for energy strategy. The paper states the three challenges that must be met in order to combine environmental, security of supply, competitivity and social goals. These challenges are specified as: environmental concerns, decline of UK indigenous fuel supplies and updating the energy supply infrastructure.
The paper reveals that the key goals for this strategy are:to get on path to cut CO2 emmisions by some 60 % by 2050, with real progress by 2020;to maintain the reliability of energy supplies;to promote competitive markets within the UK and beyond, helping to raise the rate of sustainable economic growth and improve productivity; andto ensure that every home is adequately and affordably heated.
This is a very positive white paper for sustainable energy markets - renewables are to provide 20 % of UK energy by 2020 and nuclear power is labelled an 'unattractive option'. Energy efficiency and reduced levels of carbon will complement a well-designed energy infrastructure and marketplace, with CHP and distributed power networks allowing more effective delivery, especially of renewable sources.Diversity of sources and simultaneous moves toward increased community involvement and better international relations will enourage a reliable and secure supply of energy for the UK.
Overall, this paper indicates the UK's willingness to be a positive, active and influential participant in the global mobilisation to a more sustainable future. This is a long-term strategy, but one that moves confidently in the right direction. The government's white paper web-site can be found at the URL below. |
