Methanol (chemical symbol: CH3OH) is the simplest of the alcohols and can be made from biomass, natural gas or coal. It is a flammable, colourless, odourless, poisonous and volatile liquid. Methanol can be formed from dry distillation of wood or through artificial synthesis.

Methanol is used directly by Direct Methanol Fuel Cells or is reformed for use in PEM Fuel Cells
