Methane (CH₄) is colourless, odourless and flammable gas that is lighter than air and is the primary constituent of natural gas. It is produced by bacteria when organic matter decomposes under anaerobic conditions. Methane is the simplest hydrocarbon.

It is the only major greenhouse gas that is produced in greater quantities by the developing world than the developed world, and is a significant contributor to the greenhouse effect.
