Hydrogen Science - fuelcellstore.com

An alternative to bonding hydrogen as a liquid hydride is to bond it to a metal hydride, such as an Iron / Titanium compound. The hydrogen bonds to the surface of the metal and so it is important to maximise the surface area of the metal by using lots of small granules.

The canister is charged by forcing hydrogen gas in at pressure, where it bonds electrochemically to the metal’s surface. This reaction is exothermic – i.e. it releases heat – and heat must be put back into the system to release the hydrogen. Alternatively, a catalyst may be used to release hydrogen without thermal input.
