EBZ, a German SME is developing planar SOFC related components and system-environments since the year 2000. Co-operating with research institutions, the main focus is on the integration of planar stacks into stationary heating appliances and small CHPs.

Especially the attraction of smaller boiler manufacturers is targeted by the demonstration units and prototypes of EBZ. The objective of EBZ is further on to offer it's services and to produce SOFC-related key components for OEMs.

EBZ has set up recently a compact demonstration unit of 1,5 kW electrical power that runs on urban natural gas (see photograph). Equipped with 2 planar SOFC stacks, manufactured by Fraunhofer IKTS, it is one of the first time that a planar mutli-SOFC-stack system has been implemented in Europe. All the main components of the Demonstrator (fuel processing, post-combustion, heat exchanger and controls) have been developed and qualified by EBZ. The next milestone of EBZ is the development of a prototype with 5 kW electrical power that fits in the same external dimensions. It will contain a SOFC stack module of the Juelich Research Centre and auxiliary burners of varying size.

EBZ is applying new standards of safety and comfort in its own daily laboratory work. All the test installations are continuously remote controlled. This feature will be an additional value of the fuel cell based heating appliances developed by EBZ in the future.
