OverviewOverview

The Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) managed for NASA by the California Institute of Technology (CalTech), is working on the development of methanol fuel cells for portable applications. Work started in the 1990s, partly funded by the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). The development was later out-sourced by founding the Direct Methanol Fuel Cell Corporation (DMFCC), a spin-off which was formed to commercialise products using patented direct methanol fuel cell technology. There has never been a more exciting time for JPL than now, with exciting missions spread throughout the solar system.

JPL spacecraft built for NASA have explored every known planet except Pluto, and a few have looked out into the universe beyond our local planets. In the past quarter century they have also taken up orbiting stations monitoring the environment of Earth itself.
