Formed by the merger with Chrysler of Germany's Daimler-Benz in 1998, DaimlerChrysler makes over four million vehicles a year. DaimlerChrysler is at the forefront of fuel cell developments in the automotive business and is continuing to invest. In addition to marketing the first fuel cell city buses in 2002, DaimlerChrysler's ongoing research into fuel cell powered cars has lead to the development of the NECAR 5. DaimlerChrysler is in close collaboration with Ballard Power Systems, which produces fuel cell stacks and builds the fuel cell engines for automobile power-trains. DaimlerChrysler holds a significant share in Ballard.
