 | Overview | The school is one of the premier engineering schools in the UK, combining expertise in mechanical, materials and manufacturing engineering. It has an international reputation for the high quality of its research, teaching and graduates. In the 2001 Research Assessment Exercise, the School was awarded a rating of 5. The total of grants awarded during the year ending August 2003 amounted to over £7.3 million.
The School offers a comprehensive range of taught courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level, two Integrated Graduate Development (IGDS) programmes and a strong portfolio of short courses. Teaching in the School has been highly rated by the Teaching Quality Assessment. We have over 800 undergraduate students, 200 postgraduate researchers and 120 staff. There are also extensive facilities for manufacture, testing and computation.
In particular, research is being conducted into hydrogen storage and fuel cell applications for advanced carbon materials including nanotechnology. Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Components are also under development.
