 | Overview | ABB is a leading supplier of products and services for power plants, offering outstanding professional competence in delivering customer driven solutions to harness energy and improve industrial performance safely, cleanly, affordably, and sustainably.
ABB is working on fuel cell development in a collaborative venture with DuPont of the United States. The focus is on direct methanol fuel cells for stationary applications of 1 to 10 kW. The great advantage of the method is that it does not require a fuel reformer for reforming fossil fuels such as natural gas to hydrogen. Rather, methanol is fed into the cell as a weak solution of less than five percent in water.
The collaboration with DuPont began in August 2000. Two prototypes are already scheduled for installation at customer sites in the fall of 2001.
DuPont is developing the fuel cell stack whereas ABB is developing an optimized electrical system for the plant. Both teams will cooperate on the development of the control system, water and heat management system and other subsystems and components. ABB will incorporate features such as net metering and microgrid communication systems.
