 | Overview | Bharat Heavy Electricals (BHEL) is the largest engineering and manufacturing enterprise in India in the energy related/infrastructure sector today.
BHEL manufactures a vast array of electrical equipment and other products including capacitors, transformers, armoured recovery vehicles, oil rigs and motors. It offers almost the entire range of equipment required for power plants such as boilers, turbines, generators, pumps, heat exchangers, and electrical instrumentation. BHEL commenced R & D of Phosphoric Acid Fuel Cells in 1987, and built its first stack in 1991. More recently it has developed a 50kW PAFC power plant, the largest fuel cell system to be developed in India to date. Consisting of two 25kW stacks this was successfully tested for 500 hours in 2001. BHEL also owns an ONSI 200kW PC25C, which it purchased and operated from 1998 to 2000 using LPG fuel. The plant is currently being relocated. In the future BHEL plans to work on developing PEMFC, using technology it has acquired from the Indian Institute of Science. |
