 | Overview | McDermott Technologies is the Research & Development division of McDermott International, a major energy services company. It focuses on new product development for the corporation, including high-impact projects such as fuel cells, fuel processing, and advanced boiler systems. One focus is the development of planar solid oxide fuel cells (pSOFC) and fuel processors that produce the hydrogen needed for fuel cells to operate. It first recognised the potential of fuel cells in the mid-1980s, and work on pSOFCs began in the 1990s.
In June of 1994, McDermott and Ceramatec Inc formed SOFCo to develop pSOFC technology. In September 1999 Advanced Refractory Technologies also joined SOFCo to develop a low cost manufacturing process for the SOFC ceramic stacks, adapting the multi-layer processing technology utilized in the electronic packaging industry. The U.S. Department of Energy is backing development work by SOFCo and has awarded McDermott a contract for the first phase of a multi-year US$20 million contract in support of the effort. |
