A fuel cell system incorporates all components required to form a fully functional power generation device for a specific application. A number of sub-systems and components make up a fuel cell system. These include:

• a fuel cell stack (a number of fuel cells connected together in series)
• balance of plant (such as heat exchangers, pumps, compressors valves, tubing, insulation materials, fuel storage tanks etc)
• power conditioning (e.g. control equipment, DC/AC converters)
• fuel processor (optional)
