Batteries are electrochemical energy conversion devices which store energy by converting electrical energy into chemical energy. The stored chemical energy is then converted it back into electrical energy on-demand.

There are many types of batteries: the most common type of battery used in industry is the Lead-Acid battery, whilst most batteries found in laptop computers, mobile (cell) phones and other high power consumption consumer electronics are Lithium Ion.
