Fuel cell power for airplanes, recreational vehicles and for range extension in electric cars

Munich. Numerous fuel cell applications will be presented by 150 exhibitors from 25 countries at Europe’s biggest hydrogen and fuel cell exhibition.

The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum fuer Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) will present its fuel cell glider Antares DLR-H2. The Stuttgart-based Institute for Technical Thermodynamics has developed the world’s first piloted aircraft, solely powered by emission-free fuel cell propulsion technology. The Antares DLR-H2 boasts of a cruising range of 750 kilometers, achieved in a flying time of around five hours. The CO2-free glider with a wingspan of 20 meters made its maiden flight on July 7, 2009 in Hamburg, Germany.

Truma Gerätetechnik GmbH & Co. KG of Putzbrunn, Germany will show their LPG-powered fuel cell system which provides off-grid power for recreational vehicles. With an electrical output of 250W (max. 6000 watt-hours per day), the system can power heating, lighting, consumer electronics or air conditioning. A standard 11kg propane canister can thereby provide approximately 28 kWh of electricity, making autonomous power supply for multi-day or week-long excursions a reality.

Another German company, Proton Motor Fuel Cell GmbH (Puchheim), will present an electric vehicle which integrates a fuel cell as range extender. The range extender delivers electricity in parallel to the battery which in turn increases the operating distance of the vehicle. This combination allows for greater possibilities in various applications.

In addition to mobile applications such as in airplanes and vehicles, stationary fuel cell applications (e.g. heating and cooling systems, off-grid power supply) as well as portable fuel cell applications (e.g. MP3 players, cell phones) will be on display in Hanover.

Outdoor Ride + Drive

Just outside of Hall 27, the Brunnthal-based company SFC Smart Fuel Cell AG will show off their fuel cell-powered electric vehicles and scooters. Trade fair visitors have the opportunity to try out these vehicles themselves. With a simple swap of the methanol cartridge, refuelling is completed in a matter of seconds. The fuel cell onboard functions as a “mobile electric socket”, charging up the battery during drive time. Within the past 5 years, SFC Smart Fuel Cell has sold over 16,000 fuel cell units for commercial use.

Connecting Renewable Energy and Electro-Mobility

For the first time in 16 years, the Group Exhibit Hydrogen + Fuel Cells will be staged together in one hall with the topic Renewables and with the new trade fair MobiliTec. In Renewables visitors can discover all forms of renewable energy technology such as photovoltaic, solar, geothermal, hydro as well as wind. MobiliTec will include hybrid and electric power systems, battery technology and alternative vehicle concepts.

About the Hannover Messe 2010

The world’s leading showcase for industrial technology will take place from April 19-23, 2010. The Hannover Messe 2010 unites 9 trade fairs under one roof: Industrial Automation, Energy, Power Plant Technology, MobiliTec, CoilTec, Digital Factory, Industrial Supply, MicroNanoTec as well as Research & Technology. In 2010 Italy will be the partner country.
