EscoVale is a specialised business consultancy practice, with expertise in the electrical, transportation and energy industries.  Founded 25 years ago, EscoVale works for clients in industry, commerce and government, throughout the world.

EscoVale has undertaken projects in most sectors of the electrical/electronic industry, but the great majority of work (and the company's main expertise) is more closely focused on topics such as:

  • 35-40% Fuel Cells & Batteries
  • 20-25% Power Generation Equipment
  • 15-20% Energy Storage
  • 5-10% UPS & Power Quality
  • 5-10% Transportation & Electric Vehicles
  • 5-10% Other (e.g. materials, process energy, semiconductors, propulsion, commercial energy)

Confidential (single-client) assignments represent an important part of the company's workload. Other work includes the preparation of market and management reports, which are more widely available on a multi-client basis.

  • Single-client:   Typically 5k to $100k
  • Multi-client:  Typically $50k to $400k  (reports @ $1k to $10k)
  • Joint Venture: Typically $50k to $250k   (reports @ $100 to $20k)

Technologies appropriate to distributed energy systems and clean transportation account for the majority of EscoVale’s work.  Numerous projects have been successfully completed or are now underway relating to:

  • fuel cells for portable, stationary, vehicular and other applications
  • energy storage
  • microturbines for power generation and vehicular use
  • reciprocating engine and gas turbine gensets
  • distributed generation concepts and markets, particularly with regard to cogeneration, district heating/cooling and agile power-only plant operating in response to fluctuating conditions in the electricity market
  • renewable energy systems
  • clean coal technologies
  • power quality issues
  • electronic power conversion/power conditioning modules and systems
  • electric and hybrid vehicles passenger cars, buses, goods vehicles and specialist applications.

Recent examples of confidential assignments in the smaller-scale power plant sector include:

  • world markets for microturbines
  • fuel cells and other emerging power technologies in North America, Asia and Europe
  • sub-1MW generating set markets in Germany, France, Italy and Spain
  • MW+ generating set markets in Germany, France, UK, Benelux and Italy
  • alternator markets in Europe, North America and the Far East
  • markets for spark ignition gas engines (in Europe and worldwide)
  • medium-speed generating set imports into Africa
  • gas turbines for power generation, mechanical drives and propulsion (worldwide)
  • more than ten projects relating to cogeneration/CHP.

Projects relating to fuel cells and other emerging energy conversion technologies have featured strongly from the outset. One of EscoVale’s first assignments in the 1970s, undertaken for an oil industry client, was concerned with the prospects for DMFCs (given the hypothesis that methanol might be developed as a large-scale energy source). This was the first of several projects completed in the 1970s and 1980s. The pace has accelerated since the 1990s and fuel cell topics are now the most important part of our portfolio. EscoVale has been commissioned to advise government agencies, energy companies, industrial clients and management consultants on fuel cell topics. These investigations have covered both technical and commercial aspects of all the main fuel cell types in a wide range of applications.

In addition to these client-specific assignments, EscoVale is involved in substantial fuel cell projects with global coverage, designed for a wider audience. The company is responsible for the preparation and future development of Fuel Cells: The Sourcebook to organisations involved in the sector and a series of Management Report the latest being Fuel Cells: Applications and Opportunities.

In each case, the projects are believed to be the largest of their type, worldwide. The aggregate project value of EscoVale’s FC work now exceeds $1M, with the Management Report accounting for about half this total. The number of organisations using EscoVale's fuel cell reports (including 300 Management Reports) is now approaching 2,000.  Fuel cell clients come from 60 countries in six continents, underlining the global interest in this subject and EscoVale’s leading position as an advisor in this area.

Territories

Much of EscoVale's work is undertaken on a worldwide scale.

In addition to these global reports, studies pertaining to markets in specific territories have been prepared for approximately 40 countries in North and South America, Africa, Middle-East, Asia-Pacific, Australasia and Europe.  Virtually all of these have involved field research in the countries concerned.
