ENrG Inc. specializes in development and manufacturing of critical ceramic components for diverse energy applications. ThinESC™ fuel cells for Solid Oxide Fuel Cell technology enables the fabrication of thin and flexible electrolyte-supported sheets providing extreme durability in a solid oxide fuel cell stack system. This thin ceramic sheet, based on 3mol% Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (3YSZ), is strong and gas tight.
- High inherent strength (>1GPa) and high toughness
- High thermal shock tolerance through flexible stress relief
- Thermal cycling capability of 2000 hours accumulated operating time
- Electrolyte thickness 50 µm or less; ≤70µm with anode, cathode coatings
We are looking for SOFC developers who are either currently using electrolyte supported technology or who are interested in investigating its advantages.
Advantages of Electrolyte Supported SOFCs
- Electrolyte-supported designs have a very thin profile compared to anode-supported designs. ENrG’s profile is < 50µm.
- 3YSZ electrolyte is stronger than 8YSZ with acceptable ionic conductivity in thicknesses < 50µm. There is a trade-off with some increase in electrolyte resistance in exchange for improved cell robustness.
- YSZ electrolyte-supported cells have better mechanical strength, thermal stability and chemical stability over typical NiO-YSZ anode-supported cells.
- The anodes in anode-supported designs typically are multilayered or graded, therefore they require additional processing steps.
- Strength and toughness of 3YSZ enables fabrication and handling of thin and flexible sheets.
- This thin, gas tight membrane has the ability to scale in size and has been demonstrated with ≥ 600cm2 active areas cells.
