Hebridean Hydrogen Lab
The development of a skills base was seen as a prerequisite for the successful implementation of the Hebridean Hydrogen Park providing the foundation for later developments.
Two projects were delivered:
- Schools Education Project
This highlighted the emerging hydrogen market and career opportunities. Schools were provided with equipment for practical demonstration of hydrogen technologies, enhancing the existing energy studies curriculum, and engaged students in debate regarding local sustainable energy generation and consumption issues. This was a conduit to informing the wider community on local energy issues. The equipment provided students with the opportunity to participate in “Fuel Cell Fun” schools competitions.
- Hydrogen teaching and research facility
The Hebridean Hydrogen Lab is a unique purpose built teaching and research facility established at Lews Castle College. The Lab was opened in May 2006 to develop the local practical skills base that will be required in future phases of the Hebridean Hydrogen Park plan. Training is integrated into existing HNC / HND engineering programmes and is providing students with transferable skills that are increasingly in demand in the international market place. Research and development activities will maximise the opportunities for economic development and job creation.
