Best Practice Round Tables

CPI runs several "Round Tables", where members meet quarterly to develop and share best practice and seek innovative solutions to improve process industry performance. Surveys have shown that our members particularly value:

  • Networking Opportunities for Members and their Organisations;
  • Informal, low risk Sharing of Best Practice in a key discipline;
  • The opportunity to Manage Change in a Fragmented Industry; and
  • The establishment of Trustworthy Relationships with Industry Peers.

Business Improvement Through People

The aim of the Round Table is to help member companies make significant productivity improvements through more effective human resource management and practices. By working together as a group, companies gain maximum learning and benefit. Members have access to some of the latest thinking and techniques for achieving improvements from leading HR and industry experts.

Themes of past meetings have included:

  • Current evidence and research that relates HR management and enhanced shareholder value.
  • Designing and delivering 'Teams' which make a difference.
  • Developing HR strategies that work and involve staff in their development and implementation.
  • Practical steps in managing change including coaching and mentoring.

Reliability Centred Operations Round Table

The purpose of the Round Table is to provide a forum for members to share and evolve better practices in the field of Manufacturing Reliability and Maintenance so that they are supported in the achievement of their manufacturing objectives. The main emphasis of the Round Table is on:

  • Organisation and People development,
  • The innovative use of new and existing technology,
  • The processes and systems used to deliver manufacturing reliability improvement.
  • Compliance with HSE legislation.
  • Fostering cooperation between members.

Membership of the Round Table is drawn from leading operators in the chemical, petrochemical, biochemical, food & drink, pharmaceutical and utility industries with a geographical spread covering the NE, NW, Yorkshire, SE, Scotland and South Wales regions. The Group regularly reviews its forward plans to ensure that it covers topics requested by members, enriching their knowledge and expertise.

The Round Table has organized several events, including:

  • Masterclasses on Root Cause Analysis
  • Manufacturing Game
  • E-commerce Systems for Maintenance Activities

The Round Table has initiated several common interest work groups where members cooperate and develop best practice on common issues.
The atmosphere is one where members are prepared to share openly their experiences and much benefit is gained by members using the informal networking that takes place both inside and outside of the meetings and events.

Environmental Legislation

The purpose of the Round Table is to provide an opportunity for people in the process industries to share experience of various aspects of implementation and to gain insights into the legislation through inputs from expert speakers where appropriate. Lead speakers' work with members to discuss problems and successes with the emphasis on identifying solutions, particularly solutions which also add value. The Group regularly reviews its forward plans to ensure that it covers topics requested by members, enriching their knowledge and expertise.

Members choose the subject to be discussed and recent topics have included:

  • IPPC Implementation Procedures
  • Atmospheric Emissions
  • Approaches to Waste Minimisation
  • Energy Saving
  • Interpreting BAT
  • Effluent Control
  • Control/Registration of Process Change
  • Ground Contamination and Site Reports
  • Managing Environmental Legislation
  • IPPC Submissions
  • COMAH ~ Experiences in Achieving Registration
  • Implementation of the Landfill Directive and Groundwater Consequences
  • Implications of BAT

The Round Table has focused on IPPC implementation but has covered COMAH, Packaging Waste Regulations and Landfill Directives. IPPC legislation affects industries in energy, chemicals, minerals, metals, textiles, pulp & paper, tanneries, waste disposal, waste management, landfill, intensive livestock, food & drink production & processing (subject to certain thresholds on wastes and emissions) and is being implemented in stages over the next five years.

R&D Management Focus Group

The aim of the Round Table is to provide member companies with opportunities to share and apply best practice in the management of R&D activities, to identify industry R&D priorities and to identify opportunities for collaborative projects. Where projects are identified by Round Table members EPICC will provide support in formulating them, securing funding and on-going project management.
