David Morgan

David graduated from Cambridge with a degree in Mineralogy and Petrology and subsequently joined Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co where he qualified as a chartered accountant. In his time PMM (later to become KPMG), he worked in general practice specializing in audit and transaction advisory work.

Since joining Johnson Matthey, David has held senior financial and corporate development positions within each of Johnson Matthey’s three divisions. In 1995 he became Group Corporate Development Director and joined the Board in August 1999, where he is currently responsible for the Group’s corporate development activities and also legal and secretarial affairs. His role has recently been expanded to include the Group’s research and development and market development functions and he also has Board level responsibility for the Group’s Colours and Coatings Division.

David has played a leading role in all the significant transactions undertaken by Johnson Matthey over the past ten years. The largest were the sale in August 1999 of the Electronic Materials Division of Johnson Matthey to AlliedSignal for $655m, the purchase in June 2001 of Meconic plc for £147m and the acquisition of Synetix from ICI for £260m in November 2002. David also took the lead in the formation of Cookson Matthey Ceramics plc (a ceramics joint venture between Johnson Matthey and the Cookson Group) and subsequently sat on the Board of CMC from July 1994 until Johnson Matthey bought out Cookson in 1998.

Other than the transactions mentioned, David has also handled deals for Johnson Matthey in the US, Central and South America, Europe and the Far East including China and Japan. David was formerly a non-executive director of RiverSoft plc.
