Cabot’s unique strength in DMFC MEA technologies starts of course with our deep competency in electrocatalyst and carbon technologies. Cabot also brings world class catalyst ink formulation, innovative printing platforms to make layer structures and extensive experience in MEA design, including membrane and GDL selection, and fast-prototyping capability.
Our unique approach to MEA design recognizes the fundamental difference between DMFC and PEM electrodes. DMFC electrodes are typically 10x thicker and must enhance the methanol crossover and water management properties of the membrane and GDL. Electrocatalyst, layer structure, deposition and membrane selection are intimately linked. 
Cabot understands the unique challenges of designing and producing DMFC MEA’s. We have extensive capabilities and experience in DMFC membrane electrode assembly design. We partner with our customers to provide the MEA’s they require for their development and product programs.
Performance
Based on Cabot's supported catalyst and printing technology, we are able to deliver high performance for DMFC portable applications. Figure 1 shows an example of Cabot's MEA with 3.5 mg/cm2 total platinum loading. Figure 2 shows how DMFC power density change with operating voltage and cell temperatures for portable applications.
