Cabot Fuel Cell Group Introduces Dynalyst™ Electrocatalysts

Boston, MA and Albuquerque, NM (Nov. 17, 2005) – Cabot Corporation (NYSE:CBT), today announced that its Fuel Cells group, part of Cabot Superior MicroPowders, has launched four commercial grades of its Dynalyst™ high performance, platinum electrocatalysts for use in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) and Direct Methanol (DMFC) fuel cell systems. The four grades range from 20% to 60% Platinum loading on Carbon supports and are available immediately in small to large commercial quantities.

The Dynalyst™ electrocatalysts deliver performance superior to materials produced with traditional multi-step wet impregnation technology. Cabot’s Dynalyst fuel cell electrocatalysts are manufactured on Cabot Superior MicroPowders' unique spray conversion manufacturing platform. This can allow customers to achieve state-of-the-art levels of performance with lower amounts of platinum.

Greg Romney, General Manager, Cabot Energy Materials said, “The critical measure of performance for fuel cells is dollars per watt of total performance. With the Dynalyst product, Cabot is addressing the two key challenges to meeting this goal. First, using less platinum while achieving, or exceeding, state-of-the-art levels of performance and durability. Second, manufacturing the electrocatalyst at commercial scale. Cabot’s launch of these four commercial grades of Dynalyst electrocatalysts demonstrates our capability and shows our commitment to making our enabling products available to the entire industry.”

About Fuel Cells and Fuel Cell Electrocatalysts
Fuel cells are widely expected to play a major role in filling the growing demand for higher efficiency, higher power and performance energy sources for use in consumer electronics, automotive and power generation products. Fuel cell development programs are an increasing focus for many global products companies. Electrocatalysts are one of the most critical materials components in fuel cells, playing a critical role in enabling high power and high efficiency at a commercially attractive cost.
