Music to your ears - hydrogen powered stage at the Camden Green Fair

Guildford, UK, 5 June 2006 - Visitors to yesterday’s Camden Green Fair were treated to sweet green sounds thanks to the cleanest of all power generators, a hydrogen fuel cell.

The north stage at central London’s biggest green festival - now in its 15th year - was powered by a hydrogen fuel cell producing 5 kW of electricity from hydrogen supplied by industrial and special gases company, BOC.

Unlike traditional petrol or diesel generators the hydrogen fuel cell is silent and its only emission is pure water. While helping to reduce local pollution, vital for heavily built-up areas in our major cities, fuel cells are a potential power source for anything from hand-held electronic devices to cars and buses.

BOC, as part of the London Hydrogen Partnership, supported the use of the fuel cell, integrated by FDT Associates and supplied hydrogen fuel for the Fair.

BOC is an expert in hydrogen and has a dynamic programme of energy projects exploring its use as a sustainable fuel source. These include hydrogen refuelling for cars and buses in London, Shanghai, Australia and North America, hydrogen fuel cells for flood prevention, mobile phone masts and small electronic devices, as well as many activities to further develop other sustainable energy sources.

John Carolin, BOC’s global director sustainable energy, said: “Using hydrogen energy in areas such as London could play an important part in reducing pollutants and helping to combat climate change. BOC has a strong record in sustainable energy projects and we are keen to be involved in activities that encourage everyone to think about how we all use of energy and our role in reducing climate change.”
