PRESENT AND EMERGING MARKETS

This summer, Fuel Cell Power looks at the different markets for fuel cells. First, there are applications where fuel cells can already be cost effective. This is being followed by fuel cells moving into new markets assisted by Government procurement or subsidy, until they become cost effective in volume production. There will be large potential new markets for fuel cells as efficient energy generators, in combination with emerging technologies, which will contribute to energy security and help to solve global environmental problems.

There are already markets for fuel cells as generators of low power for computers, CCTV, remote monitoring systems, LED lighting and reliable back up systems. Fuel cells also provide an efficient, quiet, space-saving power source where electricity is required 24/7, such as data centres.

This summer fuel cells are contributing to a variety of leisure activities. They are ideal for incorporating with renewable energy systems to power boats. Acta Energy demonstrates how their hydrogen technologies complete the missing link in the renewable energy value chain. Their products can be recharged from solar energy in a cheap and environmentally-friendly way. They now look forward to promoting and developing their domestic-scale renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure into many new markets.

Procurement of fuel cells by regional and local governments is helping to expedite the volume production of fuel cells. In Australia, the Victorian Government is installing solid oxide fuel cells in homes. In the USA, Governor Schwarzenegger explains how fuel cells are changing the way that we use electricity, with the latest developments in Silicon Valley. The City of Leicester is hosting the UK’s first fuel cell car project.

The first in a series of articles examines the potential for fuel cells in a new, efficient energy infrastructure.

News and events from around the world are featured in the summer issue of Fuel Cell Power which will be available shortly.
