Large Canadian Order For Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Power Solution

Over the coming year, Dantherm Power A/S will supply hydrogen & fuel cell power units to Powertech Labs Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canadian utility company BC Hydro. Dantherm Power won the tender in competition with a number of other companies. This is yet another significant contract for the company based in Skive, Denmark. The goal of Dantherm Power is to make hydrogen & fuel cell technology a competitive technology.

Dantherm Power already provides competitive hydrogen & fuel cell based uninterruptable power supplies to IT and telecom network suppliers. These same power supplies will be used to increase the utilisation of the hydroelectric plant in Bella Coola, a small, remote community located on the central coast of British Columbia, in western Canada.

“The major Canadian utility company BC Hydro is currently running a pilot project at Bella Coola, where surplus electricity is used to generate hydrogen,” explains Per Albæk, Managing Director of Dantherm Power A/S. “Our power supplies use this stored hydrogen to generate electricity during periods when the hydroelectric plant is unable to meet demand.”

Dantherm Power will deliver a complete 100 kW solution packaged in a standard 20-foot shipping container. This innovative package uses a Ballard fuel cell stack to provide secure, reliable power to the community, by enabling greater use of the local hydroelectric generation plant and reducing the use of local diesel generators.

Today, diesel generators are the primary source of power for small, remote communities around the world. With the growing concerns over climate change, as well as the escalating price of diesel fuel, most of these communities are examining a transition to renewably generated power. As renewable power hydrogen and fuel cell technology represents a reliable environmentally-clean and CO2-neutral solution to help enable renewable power in these communities.

“We are extremely pleased with this order because it could lead to a potentially huge market opening up,” says Per Albæk. He also noted that BC Hydro is examining using fuel cell-based generation in other applications, where they would replace the existing, standby diesel generators.

Dantherm Power is a world leader in competitive hydrogen and fuel cell technology, and this order, confirms the company's status as a first mover within the market.
